ਜੀਵਨੀ
Avtar Singh Sandhu, celebrated universally by his pen name Pash, was born on September 9, 1950, in Talwandi Salem, Jalandhar. Born into a middle-class Jat Sikh farming family, his worldview was shaped by his father, Sohan Singh Sandhu, a retired Indian Army major who farmed a modest landholding under the economic strains of post-partition rural Punjab.
Influenced by global leftist writers like Pablo Neruda, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, and Maxim Gorky, he adopted the name Pash as a dual reference to Gorky's character Pasha and the Punjabi word for "noose," indicating revolutionary constriction against class oppression. During the late 1960s, Pash became a key literary representative of the Naxalite peasant insurgency in the Doaba region. Writing in sharp, angular blank verse, he discarded traditional Punjabi metrical conventions, publishing his explosive debut collection Loh-Katha ("Iron Tale") in 1970.
His involvement with the revolutionary Punjab Students Union (Marxist) and active resistance to state oppression led to his imprisonment during the 1975–1977 Emergency. Pash’s mature collections, including Uddian Bazan Magar (1973) and Saade Samian Vich (1978), established his aesthetic style of combining Marxist class struggle with humanitarian compassion.
His most famous poem, Sab ton khatarnak ("The Most Dangerous"), famously identified the ultimate tragedy of human existence as the "death of dreams" rather than physical violence. Pash opposed the rise of religious fundamentalism, viewing them as reactionary diversions from agrarian class struggles. On March 23, 1988—the anniversary of Bhagat Singh's martyrdom—Pash was assassinated by Khalistani militants in his native village alongside his collaborator Hans Raj Kareer.
